You can hold the camera either left-side-up, or right-side-up, and it detects it. It's a minor feature, but really a timesaver when you're flipping through thumbnails. You never have to do the "mental rotation" again. And yes, you can disable this feature if you always want landscape (top-side-up) picture files.
