OLE controls are the 32-bit successor to 16-bit VBX controls. Instead of being stored in a plain DLL and having functional interfaces, OLE controls rely on OLE automation. Hopefully this will make the interface more flexible and easier to use than VBXs. Although OLE controls use OLE, they are not object oriented. There is a flat set of properties you have access to and you can not apply OO techniques such as inheritance, polymorphism, etc.. to them.

MFC 4.0 supports OLE control containment. Earlier versions of MFC don't unless you roll your own. (yuck!) If you haven't told the AppWizard to use Database Support when you created your project, the AppWizard doesn't include the database headers. If you add "#include " in your stdafx.h, CRecordSet will be "legalized". Then open the Linker Options window and add the library: "odbc". This avoids tons of linker errors.

Ask Microsoft, or the manufacturer of the specific application you're dealing with. In-process servers are generally much faster than executable-driven OLE servers, but are rare. The VCL is free to destroy and create controls whenever it needs to. Certain events, like changing the Scrollbars property for a TRichEdit control, cause this to happen. Version 6 handles images in BMP and JPEG format. Other formats are stored as shortcuts or OLE objects. To insert an image into a Note without OLE, put a BMP or JPEG image on the clipboard and paste the clipboard into the Note. Or choose File | Import to import an image from your hard disk and then copy the imported image into the Note.

Currently, the best tool to develop OLE Controls is Visual C++ and the MFC libraries. I would imagine that other development environments (e.g., Borland's C++ compiler) will soon allow development of OLE controls. All of my experience is with VC++ and the MFC libraries and so the questions and answers are based on these tools. Yes, in TaskTimer it is possible to attach OLE documents, i.e. an MS-WORD document, to an activity. Any number of OLE documents can be attached to a single activity thereby making it possible to use TaskTimer as a storage for documents.

OLE is an acronym for Object Linking and Embedding. This is used by Microsoft Office products to embed themselves in other Office products (such as embedding a Word document in a Power Point document). Unfortunately, some viruses can embed themselves in these layers as well. The Trend Micro Office Scan client scans down into OLE layers to find embedded viruses. We chose a default of 3 layers as a balance between protection and performance.

If you want to use OLE with Perl you need the Win32::OLE module. And you need to read the documentation that comes with it. use Win32::OLE doesn't export any variables and functions to the main namespace, so if you want easy access to the in and with functions you should load the module with A lot - Gurusamy Sarathy and then Jan Dubois redesigned the code and added a bundle of enhancements. Old scripts should run with little or no modifications.

For some reason you get an 'OleInitialize' error if you open an OLE application first and then open an ODBC connection to the Access ODBC driver. If you do it the other way around, there is no problem with this. It looks like the Access ODBC driver calls OleInitialize(). This fails when Win32::OLE already initialized the COM subsystem as "apartment threaded".

In VC++ 2.x, Microsoft released the CDK (OLE control developer kit), you use that kit and it's tools to write OLE controls. In VC++ 4.0, this is no longer separate and you now just run the Control Wizard. Check your VC++ documentation for more info.

The ability to attach an OLE-type attachment is not supported in this release of Oracle Connector for Outlook.

VBXs and OLE controls are more similar than different from a functionality standpoint. The original goal of the OLE Control standard was to replace the VBX standard. VBXs are very much tied to both the 16-bit and Intel (x86) architecture. To work with Win32 on various platforms (e.g.,Mac,Alpha, etc.) the architecture had to be redesigned. Around the time the guys at Microsoft started working on VB 4.0 various OLE technologies were also being developed.

Microsoft recognized a rapid growth in multi-dimensional databases and on-line analytical processing (OLAP) tools. After all, people don't think in two dimensions.
