Usually not, chrome plating is just that, plated on the surface, very quickly, the chrome would be buffed through and the underlying nickel and copper would be exposed.

If your part needs more attention to detail (nooks and crannies prepped perfect, or ‘especially’ flat surfaces) than the guys at the plating shop can give it, we would then do the pre-polish. No, in fact, we would recommend against plating aluminum wheels. At any time, a rock pit, scrape or deicing/harsh chemicals can break the seal between the plating and the alloy, allowing corrosion to start, resulting In bubbling under the chrome surface, then ultimately peeling. There is only one reason why a penetrating stain would peel - something has occurred to prevent it from penetrating properly at the time of application, causing it to dry on the surface. Unfortunately aside from stripping, priming and repainting there is very little that can be done once paint starts peeling. Once paint begins to peel it will continue, even if you get a good paint job over top, the old surface underneath will continue to peel causing the new paint to peel off as well. When you pull your new wheelskins out of the box you will see that they have a series of clips along the outside rim. These clips are what secure the wheelskin to the rim. American Racing's Torque-Thrust wheels look great and actually are similar to the bolt-on Halibrand that was used on an original drag car.
