In the United States yarn weight is classified by the term "denier." Denier is the weight in grams per 9000 meters of yarn. In Europe, they use a base ten system called "tex." Tex is the weight in grams per 10,000 meters of yarn. More and more US manufacturers are using the tex instead of denier, as it is much easier to convert.

TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald E. Knuth, who says in the Preface to his book on TeX (see books about TeX) that it is “intended for the creation of beautiful books — and especially for books that contain a lot of mathematics”. Knuth is Emeritus Professor of the Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University in California, USA. Knuth developed the first version of TeX in 1978 to deal with revisions to his series “the Art of Computer Programming”.

Knuth has declared that he will do no further development of TeX; he will continue to fix any bugs that are reported to him (though bugs are rare). This decision was made soon after TeX version 3.0 was released; at each bug-fix release the version number acquires one more digit, so that it tends to the limit pi (at the time of writing, Knuth’s latest release is version 3.141592).

WYSIWYG is a marketing term (“What you see is what you get”) for a particular style of text processor. WYSIWYG systems are characterised by two principal claims: that you type what you want to print, and that what you see on the screen as you type is a close approximation to how your text will finally be printed. There are two answers to this.

Wash in Granger’s G-Wash Cleaner Plus—an effective, residue-free cleaner. Typical laundry detergents contain fabric softeners, fragrance and color brighteners which are water-attractive residues—not something you want on the surface of your Gore-Tex fabric. A mild powered detergent, such as “Dreft” is acceptable if thoroughly rinsed. (Absolutely NO “Ivory Snow” or Woolite—they are loaded with wate-attractive residues).

You can get a LaTeX style file, 'larch.sty', and a macro file defining a bunch of mathematical symbols, 'larchmath.tex', by anonymous ftp from the following URL. ftp://ftp.cs.iastate.edu/pub/larch/tex The documentation for 'larch.sty' says that it is to be used with LaTeX 2.09. However, it can be used with LaTeX2e. To do so, put the following lines at the start of your LaTeX input.

Gore-Tex fabric is created when Gore laminates their patented Gore-Tex membrane to high-performance textiles, which are then used by garment manufacturers to make outerwear, accessories, and footwear. The Gore-Tex membrane has 9 billion pores per square inch, with each pore 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet. These tiny holes are too small for water and wind to pass through from the outside, which is how Gore can guarantee you'll stay dry and warm in a garment made with Gore-Tex fabric.

Denier refers to the density of the mesh in the product material. The higher the denier number the stronger the material.

To restore the water repellency to Gore-Tex we recommend using Granger’s Waterproofing for Synthetic Fabrics—either wash-in or spray-on versions. (You can find it in most sports specialty stores.) Use the wash-in method for most shell garments and follow the label directions. Be sure to use warm water to wash and rinse. Use the spray-on version for garmens with DriClime® linings.

The MATLAB (version 4) print command provides a "-deps" argument which provides a Encapsulated PostScript file of your plot. Some people have reported various problems getting this stuff to work. Some suggestions: Use "bbps" and ghostscript. "bbps.shar" is available via anonymous ftp on "csi.jpl.nasa.gov". You'll need to get GhostScript from your nearest GNU ftp site.

The 'X' stands for the Greek letter Chi, and is pronounced by English-speakers either a bit like the 'ch' in 'loch' ([x] in the IPA) or like 'k'. It definitely is not pronounced 'ks'.
