Can powder coatings be applied directly to metal substrates?
Crosslink Powder Coatings Inc.While powder coatings normally require no primers, it is important to provide a clean and properly pretreated surface for the powder coating to adhere. For steel substrates, it is advisable to abrasively blast clean prior to coating and applying an iron or zinc phosphate pretreatment. For aluminum substrates, it is advisable to provide a chromate or chrome-free conversion coating to the aluminum surface. Chrome-free pretreatments are rapidly replacing hazardous chromate pretreatments.
Can powder coatings be applied straight onto metals substrates?
FAQWhilst powder coatings generally require no primers, it is important to provide a clean and pretreated surface for the powder coating to adhere to. Metals that are planned for internal location can escape the need for pretreatment, however it is advisable to provide some metal pretreatment such as a phosphate finish to steel or chromate finish to aluminium to ensure maximum performance of the finish. Can powder coatings withstand any condition and be applied to oxidized substrates?
Crosslink Powder Coatings Inc.Unfortunately, there is a myth that since powder coatings are so much easier to apply than liquid coatings, and offers a very hard film, they can withstand anything. This carefree approach has lead to some disappointing applications and negativity in selecting powder coatings for premier architectural projects. Powder coatings rely on a clean and properly pretreated substrate. Oxidation deposits, which are corroded material, must be removed prior to applying the powder coating. See similar questions...
Is it true that powder coatings can withstand any conditions and can even be applied to rusty metal?
FAQUnfortunately there is a myth that since powder coating is so much easier to apply than wet paints, and retains a very hard film, that powder coatings can withstand anything and everything. Indeed this carefree view has led to some disappointing applications of powder coatings. Powder coatings rely on a clean, pretreated surface like any and every other coating. See similar questions...
Can powder coatings be applied on site?
FAQPowder Coatings are a factory applied finish using specialised equipment. The equipment includes an electrostatic spray gun, spray booth and an oven to bake (or cure) the coating. On site application is not possible given the hot curing cycle required to fuse the coating. See similar questions...
Under what conditions can powder coatings be applied?

What is the price difference for Antimicrobial Coatings vs. other powder coatings?
Frequently Asked Questions about Steel for Wire ProductsApproximately 100% more due to the cost of the active ingredient and the specialized method of incorporation, for which we hold a patent. Is there a feel due to Anitmicrobial Coatings which differs in texture from other powder coatings? I refer to "hand", in the textile industry sense. Generally, there is nothing in the feel or appearance of the coating that will indicate an antimicrobial product, but the incorporation process can lead to more orange peel. See similar questions...
How are powder coatings manufactured?
FAQPowder Coatings are produced by dry blending of resins, pigments, additives and curing agents, which are then extruded at elevated temperatures to melt mix the ingredients. The material then becomes thick and viscous like a honey mixture which is cooled using super chilled water, before the material is crushed progressively to a fine, well defined particle size. How safe are powder coatings?
Crosslink Powder Coatings Inc.Powder coatings contain no solvents, which simplifies their transportation and storage, but are classified as a nuisance dust. Workers should use proper dust masks, protective garments, gloves and skin creams to prevent inhalation or contact with their skin. Use mild soap and water to remove from skin contact.
