Every summer month has something special to recommend it: late May and early June may still have snow on the ground and fewer leaves on the trees. This makes spotting wildlife (with their Spring newborns) easier. Late June and July feature stupendous wildflowers (including our famous fireweed) and, generally, warmer temperatures. The Alaska cruise season begins in May and ends in September. Any earlier or any later and you'll experience shorter, colder and wetter conditions. Anytime between May and September is a good time to go to Alaska, but there are better times in the season to travel if you have a specific interest or motivation. For example, if you're interested in saving money, then the shoulder seasons of May and September are the best times to go.

Alaska cruises are only offered between May and September. If you want longer, warmer days, the best time to visit is mid June through mid August. This period also has the longest hours of daylight. Don’t expect to see fireworks on the 4th of July! This is also the busiest time to visit Alaska because school is on summer break and many families are traveling in Alaska. In Alaska, northern lights are not normally visible during the summer months due the unusual amount of sunlight. The best time to see northern lights is in the wintertime.

Any summer month is good for halibut (winter would work too, if the fishermen didn't mind freezing their fingers). The big flatfish live on the bottom and seem little influenced by what's going on up above. For salmon fishing, however, you must meet the runs of fish returning to the rivers to spawn. A run can be as short as a week of peak fishing in each stream for each of the five species of Pacific salmon, and when that week happens varies in every stream.

We refer to daylight at midnight in the summer as "the midnight sun". Daylight hours during summer solstice in Barrow observes the midnight sun for 84 days of continuous sunshine from May 10 to August 2nd. In the winter the situation is pretty much reversed. The sun sets at noon on November 18 in Barrow and doesn't show again until midday of January 24th. Again Alaska is a very large area, and the midnight sun varies in each location.

A state the size of Alaska needs it own time zone. We are one hour behind the Pacific Time Zone and four hours behind the East Coast Time Zone. When it is 12 noon in New York, then it is 8:00am in Anchorage.

Alaska is on Alaska Standard Time and in its very own time zone from the remaining states in the United States. Alaska is four hours behind Eastern Standard Time, three hours behind Central Standard Time, two hours behind Mountain Standard Time, and one hour behind Pacific Standard Time. There are two seasons for Alaska - Shoulder Season, Mid Season and Peak Season. Shoulder Season includes cruises in May and September. Mid Season is June and August, and Peak season is the last week in June, all of July, and the first week in August. Peak Season tends to cost more because the weather is better and that is when more people can travel. The kids are out of school and that's when folks take their family vacation. Since demand is higher, so are the prices.

The best time to visit Bhutan are: March through May in spring, and September through November in Fall. The best time to visit Cape Town may be July to November when migrating whales are easy to spot. Ideally, orchids should be repotted immediately after flowering. Any plant that is potted in decomposed, packed bark should be repotted immediately. Most orchids need to be repotted once every 1 to 2 years. The bark or moss that the orchids are grown in gradually deteriorates. If repotting is not done, the bark or moss become decomposed and packed down.
