We can kiln dry for an extra fee, but we don't recommend it. In the long run, kiln drying will not change the moisture content in your log. Logs are like delayed-action wicks and will absorb whatever moisture will bring them into equilibrium with their environment. Kiln drying will not make a log which is prone to bow or twist into a straight log. Kiln drying will conceal these defects, and after the bands are loosened and the logs absorb moisture, the bows and twists will show up.

We use dead standing trees for our house logs. These trees have done most of their drying, checking and twisting by the time we have them sawn into cants. Some further checking may occur as the log cants lose any ambient moisture still present in the logs. Checks are basically harmless to your logs and are a natural process that occurs as large timbers season.

LOGKITS.COM logs are air dried rather than kiln dried prior to final milling. The final drying and shrinkage process on any log is not generally complete until after one full heating season.

The Original Lincoln Logs has for the past 25 years air dried their logs, it is the more natural way of removing moisture. Air drying reduces the amount of checking in the log whereas kiln dried logs have a tendency to increase the checks because of the rapid forced drying process.

Some manufacturers have tried to make an issue over air-drying versus kiln-drying. We air-dry our products, and we have always air-dried. Our logs are as beautiful and functional as any, and at a lower cost. With any drying method, the logs should be dried to approximately 20% or less. With a kiln, the moisture content of the logs can be reduced further, depending on the kiln's setting.

Every client has the option of using kiln-dried timbers. Obviously there is an associated cost, but for some applications the use of kiln-dried timbers is simply more appropriate.

One advantage of kiln-dried lumber is that any live fungi present in the green lumber will have been killed by the heat of the kiln; in other words, KD lumber is sterile after leaving the kiln. However, if it gets sufficiently wet afterwards, then it is at the same risk of decay as any other wood.

It is a matter of choice. Clearly, one of the advantages of kiln-drying shavings is that the resulting chips are not only very dry, and therefore highly absorbent, but they also keep the bag from "sweating". However, kiln-drying lumber takes more time and is very costly. We have found a mix of "green" shavings along with the kiln dried shavings makes for the best product.

Finished balsa wood, like you find in model airplane kits, varies widely in weight. Balsa is occasionally found weighing as little as 4 lbs. per cu. ft. On the other hand, you can also find balsa which will weigh 24 lbs. or more per cu. ft. However, the general run of commercial balsa for model airplanes will weigh between 6 lbs. to 18 lbs. per cu. ft. Eight to twelve lb. balsa is considered medium or average weight, and is the most plentiful.

Kiln dried wood is wood that is dried in an industrial kiln. The process dries the wood completely, kills any insects that may have been living in the wood, and produces great looking firewood that is extremely easy to light and keep burning. The other method of drying wood is to naturally season the wood over the course of six to twelve months by splitting the wood and allowing it to gradually dry outdoors in the sun, wind, heat and rain.

The difference is simple. Kiln dried wood will not split or crack when taken from a humid climate such as Indonesia, into a dryer climate such as the USA or Europe. Furniture that is not made with kiln dried wood will immediately begin to deteriorate upon exposure to these drier climates. The result is furniture that cracks and splits and cannot be repaired because of continual deterioration. If you buy furniture that is not kiln dried you are making a huge mistake!

Your kiln should be in a covered enclosed space. A basement or garage is usually a good location. Preferably the floor should be concrete. There must be at least 12" from the walls of the kiln to any walls of the room. Keep all flammables away from the kiln. Room should be vented with either good natural ventilation or forced ventilation fan. Regardless of whether the Logs are "kiln dried" with heat and moisture, "air dried" outdoors or delivered "green", by following the manufacturer's instructions, the home will be trouble free, energy efficient, comfortable and requires minimal maintenance.

Unless you're paying a kit price, we don't make those calculations, but we're happy to tell you how to do it: Determine the perimeter, including pass corners, of your structure. Determine the number of courses of logs needed to give you the wall height you want, and multiply that by the perimeter. Order 10% more logs than you need to allow for error and mis-cuts.

One of the most stable softwoods, Western Red Cedar is nevertheless a natural material. Cedar siding can swell or shrink as it gains or loses moisture to reach equilibrium with the moisture content of the surrounding air. In the Midwest, kiln-dried products are closer to the moisture levels of the final installation environment. Also, drier wood products are more receptive to finishes than unseasoned or green sidings. For this reason, kiln-dried sidings are recommended for prefinishing.

No. The best way to dry logs is to lock them into position and protect them from rain-which is what happens when we construct a log home.

Dried fruit is fresh fruit that has been dried naturally in the sun or in dehydration machines. Moisture is removed from the fresh fruit, which makes it more portable and convenient than fresh fruit. However, it does not remove the natural vitamins and antioxidants, making dried fruit as healthy and good for you as fresh fruit!
