Do I need to replace my rotors when I replace my pads?

The Peugeot 206 GTI Page
It is your call, but your mechanic should be able to tell you whether or not they are worn down to a thickness where the law requires you to replace them. This message, which is generated after performing QC or when the "Xducer Pads Aging" message is displayed, occurs when the pads require replacement due to normal wear and tear. When this message first occurs, order the new pads and install them according to the instructions in the User's Guide. Always replace the transducer pads in pairs

Do I need to turn my rotors each time I change pads?

Another religious issue... In general: NO, unless your rotors are badly scored. If they are warped, replace (it's cheap and easy to do). Call places like APS & WolfSport. Note: If you take the rotors off yourself, turning them at a machine shop costs very little.

Which should last longer, brake rotors or pads?

Theoretically, the rotors should outlast the pads. In fact the rotors should last several sets of brake pads, but they often don?t. Excessive rotor runout, uneven rotor wear, the appearance of hard spots and/or heat damage (cracking, glazing and discoloration) can all make good rotors go bad. Unless the rotors are in like-new condition and show no grooving or wear, resurfacing is always recommended when the pads are replaced.

How about brake pads, calipers, rotors, tires?

You are correct; resurface them if there is enough meat left on them (wherever you take them to be cut will check the thickness first) or replace them with new ones. How can I extend the life of my brake pads and/or rotors?

Tidland frequently asked questions
The useful life of brake pads and rotors is dependent on the application and cannot be predicted. See Tidland Air Brake Installation, Operation, & Maintenance Instructions for general guidelines to correct brake operation problems. Check the maximum air pressure required for proper tensioning at full roll diameter. Tidland brakes are designed to operate at a maximum 50 PSI during normal tensioning. Higher pressures will lead to premature pad/rotor wear.

Why do we machine the disc rotors when replacing disc pads?

Petermark Automotive: Frequently Asked Questions
Modern vehicles today have better braking systems than vehicles of yesterday, but to achieve this the frictions applied are far greater and generate a lot more heat, causing disc rotor warping and bending. This is normally felt as a brake shudder or brake pedal pulsing. Excess noise can also be generated due to glazing of the disc rotors again caused by heat.
