I started out carrying 55 lbs on my back from Amicalola Falls. For the most part, that varied very little. The pack would always be heaviest coming out of town with 5 or 6 days worth of food. Halfway through the trip, I did experiment with sending things ahead to make my load lighter but the difference was negligible. The least my pack weighed was 45 lbs. Sad really.

I carried limited bivy gear (an Epic fabric Bibler Winter Bivy, a mylar space blanket, a vapor-barrier shirt, and a few extra clothing layers, specifically thin polypropylene fabric top & bottom, a pile vest, and a pile neckgaiter), just enough to get me through the night very uncomfortably if necessary. Also a thin foam pad. And a pair of extra thin sox.

The men were heavily loaded. Each had 200 rounds of .303 ammunition, rifle and bayonet, an entrenching tool with two empty sandbags wrapped around it, a heavy backpack and two white bags containing two days' extra rations, which included can of bully beef, biscuits, tea and sugar. The rifles were unloaded. There was to be no shooting before daybreak. Warfare had been turned back a couple of centuries. Before the sun was up the enemy could die only from stab wounds.

I obtained the excellent, two guidebooks (1 x Calif, 1 x Oregon/Washington) titled, "The Pacific Crest Trail" .from Wilderness Press - they will give you a good trail description, strip maps, and a guide as to where you can expect to find water, so you can plan your schedule to reach water by the end of the day. (I believe Wilderness Press now cover the trail with three separate volumes.)

Well, how much you carried would depend on several factors - would you be buying all or most of your food along the way, or would you have food mailed off to you at intervals - would you be able to have someone forward money to you if needed for an unforseen emergency - would you be able to access a bank account at say, Ashland, or Big Bear etc. What I did was, have the bulk of my food (dehyd) forwarded to me at intervals along the trail by a company called Trail Foods in LA.
