The best spacing is about one tree in an area measuring 30 feet x 30 feet, or 50-60 mature trees per acre. Initially, a maple grower may start with a higher density of trees but will thin several times to achieve a final density of 50-60 trees per acre. The bottom 4-6 feet or tapping zone will be reduced in value by defects associated with tapping. Above this zone, the quality of the wood will not be affected by tapping.

We do not know the answer to this question. We plan to undertake a small research project to answer this question in the near future. You may want to try your own experiment to answer this question.

A healthy tree 10-17 inches in diameter (31-53 inch circumference) should have no more than one tap. A tree 18-24 inches in diameter (57-75 inch circumference) should have no more than two taps. A tree larger than 25 inches in diameter (79-inch circumference) should have no more than three taps.

Plastic containers are inexpensive but allow some gas exchange that causes decreases in syrup quality. Syrup in plastic containers will degrade (change color) about one grade after 3 to 6 months of storage. Syrup stored in plastic containers should be refrigerated. Glass is more expensive and breakable but retains quality longer. Tin was used commonly in the past and is still used to attract traditional consumers.

The sapling stage is ideal for thinning maple trees as younger trees are vigorous and respond to thinning dramatically. Thus, if a stand is thinned at the sapling stage, the trees will reach tapping size at a young age and with wide, deep crowns necessary for maximum sap production.

Genetics and the environment both affect sap sweetness. Some trees have one or more genes that cause sweeter sap. Environmental factors including weather, the site on which the tree is growing, and whether the tree is growing in the open or surrounded by other trees all affect sap sweetness.

The equipment needed depends on whether you are producing maple syrup for home or commercial use. For home use, you will want to have the following: Collection or storage containers, such as plastic or metal trash cans (several gallons in capacity and leak-free) for sap storage before processing. Storage capacity of 1-2 gallons for each tap. Pan with high sides and a heat source for boiling sap. Stainless steel with lead-free solder or welded seams strongly suggested.

Average spacing for semi-dwarf fruit trees is 15 feet You may plant them further away but the pollination process may be more difficult to occur and may inhibit fruit production.

Spacing can depend on the purpose of your landscape. Commercial plantings can be spaced 35 feet apart with 44 trees to the acre. You can also space them 75 feet apart with 11 trees to the acre. Residential plantings usually are spaced at 40 feet apart.

Spring is an ideal time to plant new citrus trees. Garden centers have a good supply to pick from, and the trees are ready to begin root and shoot growth. Make sure you give the new tree a sunny site and space the trees at least 12 to 15 feet apart. If you miss the spring planting season, don't worry. Container-grown trees are available year-round. They can be added to the landscape anytime.

The sticky substance that is causing the sheen on the needles of trees, the sticky film on your vehicle windshields and the goopy mess on sidewalks and roads is caused by aphids. Aphids are tiny insects that feed on tree and plant sap.

Drill holes about 15mm deep and 8-10mm diameter at about 70mm intervals around the base of the trunk and fill them with glyphosate .

BOB: Sap dripping from trees is usually due to an insect infestation like aphids (plant lice). The insects excrete excess "honeydew" which drips onto anything below. Also associated with aphids are ants, who have a symbiotic relationship with the aphids. The ants act like farmers, moving the aphids to the best feeding sites (near the growing tips) and in return harvest some of the excess honeydew for their colonies. BOB: Sounds like a raccoon problem.

The process for removing anything topically from a vehicle's paint should always be to start with the mildest solution possible, getting stronger depending upon need. So in many cases some tree saps can be addressed through a mild soap and water dilution. In cases of certain tree saps that have actually bonded to the vehicle's clearcoat, a more rigorous approach needs to be taken. Actual tree sap removal solutions can be purchased through automotive stores.

Housing your bird in a "safe house" is very important. The smaller species (finches, canaries, budgies, lovebirds) need cages with 1/2 inch bar spacing or less. Cockatiels and Small Conures can be housed with 1/2 inch bar spacing but bars should not be spaced any wider than 5/8ths of an inch. For tops, almost any softwood could be used. Some makers have made good guitars with Western Red Cedar topwood. I sometimes use alternative woods like Alaska yellow cedar and Douglas fir; both woods make excellent guitars. The back and sides can also be made in walnut, mahogany or even rosewood.

I don't know. It's such a subjective area. I personally like ash, mahogany and poplar, even though poplar isn't that pretty. I've also used Ponderosa pine a couple of times and it sounds fine. The only wood that I'm kind of wishy-washy about is alder. Sometimes it sounds great, sometimes it doesn't. I still offer it as a standard wood due to the fact that it's been used in solid body instrument construction for a very long time.
