For optimum lumens, you'll need between 20 (minimum) and 60 (maximum) watts per square foot. There may be several different arrangements that will give you the optimum light energy.

This has become a very popular question. The general rule for Tropical Aquariums is one light for each 18-24" of tank length. I started out with 2 lights on my 55 Gallon tank which is 48" wide and recently added a third light which I actually liked...but after a few weeks noticed increased algae growth, so I have now gone back to the two lights.
