One of the greatest benefits to obedience school is socialization. Socializing your puppy early on will help him get along well with all kinds of people and pets. He can be enrolled in a socialization class as soon as he is twelve weeks old. These classes are designed purely as a socialization tool and do not focus on specific commands.

The GSDCA Affiliate Clubs encourage new owners to socialise their puppy from a very young age, and therefore hold puppy classes for puppies from 8 weeks of age. Please ensure you bring your puppy's up-to-date vaccination certificate with you.

I have VERY good reputable trainers I can refer for advanced training and they like to get the puppy at about 7-8 months old - for obedience I also have some good folks and they can start with this a lot sooner at about 4-5 months old.

Basically, the Puppy Class and Basic Obedience will go through the same syllabus. The only difference is that it is always easier to train a puppy than an adult as puppies has not learnt many respond to different environment and is therefore easier to train them to the way that you want. Puppy playpens are great. They give puppies room to play but also keep them confined. You can put paper down for them if they need to use the bathroom, yet still have room for a bed, toys, and a water dish. If you wish to confine them to a single room without carpet, baby gates work nicely, too.
