Arc welding electrodes are coded by the American Welding Society [AWS]. Each AWS number gives complete information about the electrode. Classifications of mild and low alloy steel electrodes are based on an 'E' prefix and a four or five digit number. The first two digits [or three, in a five digit number] indicate the minimum required tensile strength in thousands of pounds per square inch [psi].

Welding arcs are at a very high temperature (usually between 2,000 and 5,000 degrees F.). At these high temperatures, elements in the air (such as oxygen and nitrogen) react with the elements in the metal to be welded, and form compounds that affect the strength and characteristics of the metal. To keep a strong metal, the welding arc must be shielded from the air. The flux coating on the welding rod "burns" when the arc is established and forces air away from the weld area. Each type of welding rod has a specific application. The center wire of the welding rod is made of a metal material. The wire must be the same as the type of metal to be welded. For example, if you want to weld steel, you need a welding rod that has a steel wire. If you wanted to weld aluminum, you would need a rod with an aluminum wire center. That 10-10-10 on the bag or bottle is best explained by remembering "up, down, all-around". The first number is the percentage of nitrogen by weight. Nitrogen promotes growth and green-up. The second number is the percentage of phosphorus by weight and is helpful for good root growth. The third number is the percentage of potassium by weight which promotes all-around plant health such as hardiness and disease resistance. Numbers will be automatically added to the end of an auto-received file if there is a name conflict in the auto-receive directory. The numbers indicate the time that the file was received. The federal government requires all air conditioning and heating equipment to be rated for efficiency. The higher the rating, the more efficient the model. Gas furnaces are rated for (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency). This defines the amount of heat used to warm your home from the burned fuel. A 90% furnace will use 90% of the available heat to heat your home. 10% of the heat is vented outdoors. Many older gas furnaces are only 60% efficient. The other 40% is vented outdoors.
