Late March through late May represents the period of long rains in Tanzania. This is usually not an ideal time to plan a safari because of the potential for sudden downpours. Directly after the long rains, however, is a wonderful time to visit Tanzania's national parks due to the abundance of wildflowers and vegetation. It is also a wonderful time to go on safari because the level of dust and the number of tourists is minimal.

Remember, Tanzanian weather depends completely upon where you are in the country ? for example, coastal areas like Dar Es Salaam can be extremely hot and humid. On the other hand, areas in the north and west can become quite chilly in the evenings. Lightweight clothing and rainwear is recommended as well as warmer clothing for the evenings (light jacket and/or light sweaters), and warmer cloths if you plan to travel during the colder months.

Located at an altitude of 5,000 to 7,600 feet, northern Tanzania's dry sunny climate is nothing like the steamy African jungle of Tarzan movies. The weather is spring-like year round, with daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s, evenings in the 60s. Kenya straddles the equator, and Tanzania is not far south, so both countries enjoy a tropical climate. The coasts are hot and humid, while the inland areas are generally temperate (due to the altitude). The northern parts of Kenya are very hot and dry. There is a well established weather pattern. The monsoon normally arrives late March lasting until late May. This is not the time to visit. April is the wettest month of the year, with May not far behind, usually up to 15 inches of rain each month and, on average, up to 20 days of rain. Several hotels and many camps/lodges in the parks close at this time. You will not see Tanzania/Zanzibar at its best.

Africa can be reached by regular international flights to its major cites. The easiest route into Tanzania is on Northwest/KLM via Amsterdam on the direct flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport. A popular alternative is to fly to Nairobi, Kenya, where we will meet you and drive you into Tanzania - about a two hour drive. This is a good route if you are starting your vacation at Sinya Camp as it is located immediately across the border from Kenya.

There are two seasons in this part of the world - rainy and dry. The rainy season generally begins in May and ends mid August.

Volunteers should arrive in Tanzania the day before their projects start, which is usually on a Sunday. If you come in earlier to Tanzania , you will need to arrange a place to stay and a return to the airport on Sunday to be picked up.

Tanzania is a safe country, and you can relax while you are there. That being said, it's still important to use common sense. You should be careful not to "act like a tourist," for example, obviously looking at maps, wearing a camera, or flaunting expensive cloths, jewelry, or electronic devices. Always show a lot of respect of authoritarian figures, because though Tanzania is safe by African standard, the police are known to be corrupt in some cases.

Tipping is expected everywhere, and service workers are paid the lowest minimum wages because their employers expect them to get by on tips.
