Why can't I just use an arch support for flat feet?

SecondWind - Flat Foot FAQ
It sounds logical that if the arch flattens out, then it should be propped-up with an arch support. Arch supports work for people who have normal or high arches, but if they were the answer for people suffering from flat feet everyone would be using them and the problem would no longer exist. (There are some people who've solved their flat foot problems by using arch supports.) Most people with flat feet continue to suffer, as their problem is not fully understood.

Can I go barefoot even if I have flat feet?

The Barefoot FAQ
Basically, if you can walk barefoot and it doesn't hurt, then yes. Many barefooters were born with arches lower than the "normal" but still enjoy the pleasures of going barefoot. For someone with low arches or outright flat feet, habitual shoe-wearing often exacerbates the problem due to weak feet (see Is it actually healthy to go barefoot?). Additionally, forcing feet into shoes with arch supports against their natural shape can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

Arch supports are often times quite rigid, which can make them quite invasive and therefore painful for people with flat feet.

Nobody says arch supports are not effective. Arch supports are quite effective at doing what they are intended to do - immobilize the foot at mid stance (both heel and toes on the ground). For many people, especially with foot pain, this is an improvement although it may only be so temporarily. Combined with a rigid shoe, an arch support can immobilize the foot completely.

Can't I just do/use my Solution Kits with support from my therapist?

Welcome to The Solution
We do not recommend doing so. We have learned that psychotherapists and other health professionals typically do not provide effective Solution coaching. This was a surprise to us, but we have learned that most psychotherapists have not mastered the skill to nurture and set limits from within. It is difficult to teach something you have not mastered yourself. That is why all Certified Solution Providers must complete both personal and professional Solution training.
