There are perhaps 10-12 different wood species that are acceptable and commonly used for fence applications. What is best for you will depend on what is readily available in your area and adaptable to the soil and climate conditions on the property works. BACK TO TOP

If the sign will be used outdoors you should choose a wood that holds up well outdoors. I usually use Northern White Cedar because it's harvested locally here in Northern Michigan. But Western Red Cedar, Cypress, White Oak, Walnut, and Black Cherry also are good choices for use outdoors. There are probably other species that would work just as well. Try to avoid knots because they can chip away and can throw off the accuracy of your cut when you bump into them with the router bit.

A???????????? This question has a multitude of answers and many of them depend on what is available in your locality, the type of woods you prefer, the speed you wish to cook at, and so forth. Refer to the data sheets in the Resources Section of this web site and consult with your timber merchant.

Most decks are constructed of pressure treated lumber. A penetrating deck stain tends to work best on the horizontal surfaces (flooring) of decks due to constant foot traffic. The vertical surfaces of decks and fences may be stained or painted according to personal preference. Check the porosity of the wood before attempting to stain by sprinkling water on the surface. If the water beads, then the stain will not penetrate the wood.

A/: The Dura Seal Finishes Dura Seal 2000ZC-2, Dura Seal1000, and Dura Seal Polyurethane are each commercial grade superior quality floor coatings. The differences are in the application dry time, odor and color. The Dura Seal Polyurethane and Dura Seal 1000 water based finishes although different in chemistry are both Oil Modified Polyurethane and are ambering finishes. For home heating, firewood should be compared by energy content per cord. This is usually expressed in BTU's (British Thermal Units) per cord. A firewood type that is higher in BTU content will have more heat available per cord. It is important to note that all firewood has about the same energy content per pound. However, since the density (volume per pound) will vary greatly depending on the species, the energy content will also have a wide variation.

All hardwoods that are used for flooring are very dependable and resilient. They do have their different scales of hardness that you will find by referring to the Janka Hardness and Stability Chart. Some of the more popular species of wood that are used for flooring are Hard Maple, Red Oak, Cherry, Ash, and Birch. Of these species listed, even though they do have different scales of hardness, you will not see a great difference under normal wear and tear.

A temporary solution might be to enclose your garden with utility wire or chicken wire held up by T-posts. If you want a more permanent fence you can use Stockade fence with utility wire. Remember . . . you cannot stop gophers, moles, and prairie dogs with a fence.

Milling to the proper size and proportion results in better looking, longer lasting fences and decks.

Use only well-seasoned hardwood (oak, hickory). If you have to burn softwoods (fir, cedar), be certain they are well seasoned. Look for split, dry wood that has been stacked for up to a year. Loose bark and cracks in the ends are signs of seasoned wood. One easy way to tell is: if it drops its leaves, it's better to burn than if it stays green all year, i.e. evergreens.

We mainly use teak and sapele wood on our model boats. Other types of wood are used, (e.g. Meranti on painted models, oak etc), and on very large ships, we may use fibreglass. You have a choice as to the type of wood / material that we use, so please let us know if you have a specific request.
