Most cars and engines are about 16 inches wide and vary in length from 3 ft for a very short tank car to 10ft long for a modern Dash 9 engine. Rolling stock describes any "railcar" that a locomotive pulls. As of this date, WCRR has 21 tank cars, 31 box cars, 4 covered hoppers, 3 reefers, 43 flat cars, 32 coal hoppers, 6 cabooses, 19 gondolas, 10 engines and 10 engineer riding cars(flat cars) and 6 maintenance of way cars.

I don't have a date for the last use of wood over the Sierra. I do know that SP was still using wood fuel on the Siskiyou route into the 20th century. On 4-8-0s, no less. In simple terms, a locomotive can pull approximately ten standard Hornby Mk1 coaches on a level surface, although this is dependent on a few factors including the cleanliness of the track, any gradient on your layout and the weight of the load. However, to get a feel of how the locomotive performs, only add a small number of coaches while you are learning to drive. Most railroads can train their own locomotive engineers based on their individual training programs that have been submitted to the FRA. Outside contractors are available, but caution should be taken when selecting one. Only a designated supervisor of locomotive engineers (DSLE) can certify a locomotive engineer. Outside contractors may do the training, but unless they are a DSLE they cannot certify the engineer.

IR has many training centres in different places. A large Locomotive Training Centre is at Asansol for training in the operation and maintenance of electric locos, and a Diesel Training Centre is found at Gaya for diesel locos. Another training school for AC locomotives is at Annanur, near the Avadi EMU shed. Arakkonam has a Drivers Training Programme (facilities provided are not known).

The D&S purchased "Hot Shot 1" which was put into service in July of 2002 primarily as an emergency and fire prevention vehicle. The D&S purchased four additional diesel locomotives in September 2002, which are being restored and will be used for similar maintenance of way and emergency applications. In May 2003, "Big Al" an 87 ton G.E. Center cab locomotive was put into service if drought conditions might dictate the need.
