Only certain ionizer air purifiers have ionizers built in. Unless the air purifier specifically states that it is has an ionizer it is more likely to use a mechanical filter instead.

Although the FDA has no health-related standards, it does consider some portable air filtration systems to be Class II medical devices. In the United States, nothing can claim this status without FDA approval. To get approval, a manufacturer must show two things: (1) that the device is safe, usually indicated by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) seal, and (2) that it has a medical benefit. To keep your furnace and air conditioner operating at peak efficiency. When the heat transfer surface of the furnace and air conditioner (indoor evaporator coil located on top of your furnace) gets covered in dirt (dust, etc...), it requires more energy to achieve the same load. For heating, this means you will consume more gas and electricity to heat your home, and for air conditioning, you would use more electricity to cool your home.

Look for the arrow showing airflow direction on the old air conditioner furnace filter and remember which way that it points. Make sure that you turn off your HVAC system to stop the airflow. Remove the old air conditioner furnace filter and discard it carefully so you don’t put the dust and other airborne contaminants back in the air.
