What about IP Addresses assigned by DHCP servers?

Helix Server 5.0-5.2 and TCP/IP Networking
If a Client is in an office where private IP addresses are assigned (typical with DHCP Address servers) it will not be able to maintain communication with a Helix Server in another location. Although DHCP servers typically assign private IP Addresses, they can often be configured to issue public IP Addresses. A Client that receives its IP Address from a DHCP server configured in this way should work.

How are IP addresses assigned??

SECNet - South East Communication Network - Wireless F.A.Q.
Wireless accounts are assigned one IP address via DHCP, which is subject to periodic change. Business account networks are normally configured to use NAT for multiple addressing, but may be assigned additional static addresses if necessary. These cases require a specific request, and the additional use of real addresses must be justified according to normal ARIN standards. See similar questions...

Tesco Internet Phone: Technical FAQ Internet Phone Adapter
Your DHCP Server is not assigning an IP address to the IPA (in which case you should contact your network administrator or ISP for assistance). Your network does not have a DHCP server or you have purchased a Static IP Address for the IPA from your ISP. In this case, please proceed to Assigning a Manual IP Address below (question 3), otherwise skip this step. You have connected the IPA with a straight-through Ethernet cable, when you need a cross-over Ethernet cable. See similar questions...

Why do you use dhcp to assign fixed IP addresses?

FAQ—Dedicated Servers from RAHUL.NET
Our dhcp servers know your machine's static IP address, and will always assign it that same static IP address. So using dhcp, in this case, is just another way of specifying a fixed IP address for your server, and saves you the trouble of having to explicitly enter the server IP address, gateway, and name servers. This makes our operating system install methods truly automatic. See similar questions...

What Routers use DHCP to configure their IP addresses?

DHCP FAQ
The DHCP RFC specifically says that DHCP is not intended for use in configuring routers. The reason is that in maintaining and troubleshooting routers, it is important to know its exact configuration rather than leaving that to be automatically done, and also that you do not want your router's operation to depend upon the working of yet another server. It may be possible to configure some types of more general-purpose computers or servers to get their addresses from DHCP and to act as routers. See similar questions...

How do I configure PPP using Dynamic IP Addresses (DHCP)?

Solaris on Intel - x86 FAQ
If you're using Solaris aspppd, you need a void entry in /etc/hosts and plumb it to do DHCP with PPP. Basically add this line to /etc/hosts: Change the ifconfig line in /etc/asppp.cf to link to void rather than the local machine IP entry in /etc/hosts. Then add "negotiate_address on" to your /etc/asppp.cf file. If you're using the commercial Solaris PPP, keep the default of "none" when prompted for your IP address by pppinit. Edit file /platform/i86pc/kernel/drv/asy.conf. See similar questions...

What is DHCP?

Environment settings set by a batch file are not working.
DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is used to automatically configure a host during boot up on a TCP/IP network and also to change settings while the host is attached. This means that you can store all the available IP addresses in a central database along with information such as the subnet mask, gateways, DNS servers etc. The basics behind DHCP is the clients are configured to use DHCP instead of being given a static IP address. edit] Why aren't DHCP served IP addresses on LAN sequential (100, 101, ...)?

Index:FAQ - DD-WRT Wiki
This is normal. DD-WRT uses DNSMasq and does not give sequentially ordered IP addresses. The addresses are calculated based on your computer's MAC address and "a variable". It's just a little different from the way the original Linksys firmware worked. You can disable this behavior by disabling "Use DNSMasq for DHCP" in the Basic Setup page (although it is not recommended, as you would need to change also your DNS address).
