Can we prevent earthquakes?

Earthquake FAQ - UTIG
In general we cannot prevent earthquakes from occurring. Preventing earthquakes would require some reasonable control over stress along faults. Engineers and scientists have proposed injecting fluids deep into the ground near active faults, allowing many small earthquakes to relieve stress rather than one large damaging natural event. However, many scientific and legal issues would need to be resolved before this could be happen; it isn't going to happen anytime soon, at least not in the U. S.

How do I find out about recent earthquakes in California?

California Geological Survey - Frequently Asked Questions
Near-real-time earthquake maps and lists are available at the USGS Pasadena and in Menlo Park recent-earthquake sites and at the Southern California Earthquake Center. Maps of shaking, called ShakeMaps, which show the areas of ground shaking for significant recent earthquakes are available for both Northern California and Southern California. Can earthquakes be predicted?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
No. Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. They do not know how, and they do not expect to know how any time in the foreseeable future. However, based on scientific data, probabilities can be calculated for potential future earthquakes. For example, scientists estimate that over the next 30 years the probability of a major EQ occurring in the San Francisco Bay area is 67% and 60% in Southern California See similar questions...

Are there earthquakes in Alaska?

Frequently Asked Questions about Alaska
Yes indeed! Each year Alaska has approximately 5,000 earthquakes, including 1,000 that measure above 3.5 on the Richter scale. Out of the 10 strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the world, 3 have occurred in Alaska. On Good Friday March 27, 1964 North America's strongest recorded earthquake measured 9.3 on the Richter scale. In comparison, the big one that rocked California was about a 6.8. When it hit, it created a tidal wave that dropped Seward by 6 feet and water logged most of Valdez. See similar questions...

What causes earthquakes?

Behavior-Why is the Sky Blue?
Once I was at this costume party. A guy was arriving in drag, wearing a hoop skirt, and the skirt got caught in the doorway. He was stuck for a minute until he pushed hard enough, overcame the resistance of the hoops and shot into the room. That's what causes earthquakes. Remember plate tectonics? This is the idea that the outer surface of the earth is divided into plates that sort of float independently on the earth's mantle. See similar questions...

Are earthquakes on the increase?

Earthquake FAQ - UTIG
The number of earthquakes recorded in earthquake catalogs is increasing. However, that does not mean that the rate of earthquake acivity itself is increasing. What has increased in the last three decades is the number and quality of the world's seismograph stations. We can now reliably locate most earthquakes greater than magnitude 5.2 occurring anywhere in the world, and in some regions like parts of Japan and southern California we locate most earthquakes of magnitude 2.0 and greater. Can earthquakes occur anywhere?

Earthquake FAQ - UTIG
Wherever faults exist an earthquake can occur. That includes places that have never experienced an earthquake in recorded history and places listed as devoid of any reasonable risk on seismic hazard maps. However, earthquakes are much more likely to occur in some places than others; they are most likely along the boundaries between tectonic plates and at particular points of weakness within plates. TEXAS EARTHQUAKES Q: Are there earthquakes in Texas?

Texas Earthquakes - UTIG
Yes (Figure 1). In historical times no earthquake with magnitude larger than about 6 has occurred in Texas. However, seismographs near El Paso record small earthquakes with magnitude of 2 or smaller every few days. Nearly every year earthquakes large enough to be felt by ordinary citizens occur somewhere in Texas. See similar questions...

How often do earthquakes occur?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Page
Where can I find information on the world's earthquakes? In addition to the international networks which can detect earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and greater, the majority of the countries have their own national network. All these networks are listed on the University of Washington site. Are earthquakes really on the increase? No, earthquakes occur at more or less at the same rate every year. When do most earthquakes occur?

Frequently Asked Questions
Earthquakes happen all the time. The earthquake itself is thought to occur when the state of stress exceeds the strength of the fault (or rock), the fault slips suddenly, and the 'earthquake' or ground shaking begins. See similar questions...
