In order to catch a driver speeding, there are various devices used by law enforcement, which emit various types of radio signals that enable them to calculate your speed. Radar/laser detectors are nifty bits of equipment that alert you (audibly or visually) to the presence of these devices by picking up the various signals emitted.

CO detectors/alarms are available for boats and recreational vehicles and should be used. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association requires CO detectors/alarms in motor homes and in tow-able recreational vehicles that have a generator or are prepped for a generator. In a nutshell: Modern radar detectors are superhetrodyne receivers, similar to a scanner. First, they use a microwave horn antenna to receive the radar signal. The radar signal is generally passed on to a first mixer stage, where it is mixed with a first local oscillator to produce an IF. The IF is generally passed on to one or two more mixer and IF stages depending on the design.

A radar signal is conical in shape, much like a torch beam. At 200 yards, the normal range of a radar gun, the signal is as wide as a dual carriageway. Most of the signal therefore goes past the target and on up the road reflecting off trees, houses etc, eventually becoming "radar scatter". Snoopers are extremely sensitive radio receivers tuned to these frequencies and can detect very small particles of "radar scatter" at up to 2 miles in some cases.

There are a few systems which do not work on radar or laser and therefore radar detectors cannot detect. They don’t detect VASCAR (being followed and videoed by an unmarked police car) and the SPECS SVDD and Truvelo systems. The GPS detectors alert you to these systems when they are in fixed locations.

Radar detectors can be fastened with small suction cups to the windshield, alternatively offer themselves a hook-and-loop fastener on the instrument panel or the assembly with a clip at the sun visor. The necessary assembly material is completely provided.

They're legal, but don't count on one to warn you in time to avoid a ticket. An officer who wants to catch speeders won't turn on his radar unit until he or she is ready to verify the speed of the violator. Some agencies in Florida and elsewhere employ trained pilots who clock vehicles from the air using a stopwatch, not radar. The only way to be sure of avoiding a traffic citation is to observe the speed limit.

Radar helps you see what's around you. An antenna mounted high above your boat (often on the mast of a sailing vessel) sends radar waves down towards the ground, hoping to pick up reflections of land or other boats below. It's not foolproof - it can often pick up images of waves instead of real objects - but it definitely helps you see what's around you, especially in conditions of poor visibility.

There are six different types of images currently available for the RIDGE radar display: Base Reflectivity, Composite Reflectivity, Base Velocity, Storm Relative Motion, One-hour Precipitation and Storm Total Precipitation. Base Reflectivity This is a display of echo intensity (reflectivity) measured in dBZ (decibels of Z, where Z represents the energy reflected back to the radar). "Reflectivity" is the amount of transmitted power returned to the radar receiver.
