Can I retake a class in order to get a higher grade?

CMU Mechanical Engineering :: Undergraduate FAQ
You are allowed to repeat a course in which you obtained a passing grade. However, the grades from both enrollments in the course will appear on the transcript; both will be used in calculating the total QPA; and both will be used in determining your class rank. The units, however, are counted only once. Therefore, if a course is taken more than once, the additional enrollments cannot be used to satisfy another curricular requirement, such as a free elective.

If I did poorly in a class, should I retake it in order to improve my GPA?

University of Massachusetts Amherst - Pre-Law Advising Offic...
Usually, no, if your GPA is your only concern. When you retake a class at UMass, the Registrar's office recalculates your GPA to omit reference to your first grade. Law schools and the LSAC do not. They include every grade on your transcript in calculating your GPA. For students who retake classes, this often means that your LSAC-generated GPA is less than your UMass-generated GPA. Moreover, the law schools will look at your entire transcript, not just you GPA.

How do I find out my letter grade in this class?

FAQ
A final letter grade won't be assigned until the end of the semester, but you can compute your grade progress yourself by adding up the total points possible at a given point in the semester and finding out what percentage you've earned of those total points. For example, if in Week 8 we've completed activities worth a total of 210 points and your own gradebook total is 179 points, then you currently have a grade of 85.2%, which would fall somewhere in the middle of the "B" range.

Is there any way to improve my final grade once the course is over?

Statistics 212:01 - Spring 2005 - Frequently Asked Questions...
No. This is actually illegal at this university (and probably most others as well). I can only change a final grade if I have made an error in its assignment. As such, there are no post-semester extra-credit assignments or re-examinations permitted. While I am very sympathetic to certain scenarios involving financial aid, scholarships, or admission to a certain school or program, I cannot use such criteria to adjust your grade. Your best bet to keep on top of your studies during the term.
