Most unix machines in the department have Maple installed. Type xmaple in a terminal window to start it. If you want to use Matlab, you might first try using octave on the linux machines in Room 736. Octave is a free Matlab clone. No. First, matlab is terribly expensive software. The Math Department spends many thousands of dollars each year for its PC and Unix matlab licenses, so we can't just give them away. Also, in the short-term past, all our licenses were in use. Due to a recent matlab purchase, we now have extra licenses.
