Can eye whiteners such as Naphazolin eye drops cause Dry Eye?

Bausch & Lomb International -Dry Eye FAQ
Yes. The medicines known as eye whiteners for eye irritations work by narrowing the blood vessels of the conjunctiva and reducing blood flow into the conjunctiva. This makes the eyes white for a short time, a cosmetic effect. After four to six hours reactive hyperaemia occurs, i.e. the blood vessels dilate again in order to supply the undernourished conjunctiva with nutrients. The eye becomes red again and needs more drops. See similar questions...

Blepharitis can often cause Dry Eye symptoms due to inflammation of the eye lid margins, which is caused by a bacterial infection (Staphylococci). This condition can compromise the quality of the tear film causing tears to evaporate more quickly. The bacteria produce waste material that can cause a mild toxic reaction leading to chronic red, irritated eyes. Click Blepharitis for treatment. Are atropine eye drops dangerous for children with DS?

Down Syndrome: FAQ
No. Atropine eye drops are used to dilate the pupil during eye exams, and also to treat the conditions amblyopia, esotropia and strabismus. Children with DS seem to have a greater dilation in response to atropine, and the dilation appears to last longer as well. However, there is no evidence that atropine eye drops has any effect on the body beyond the eyes. (North RV, Ophthal Physiol Opt, 7(2): 109-114, 1987) See similar questions...

Will I require eye drops after surgery?

LASIK Surgery FAQs - Questions Regarding LASIK Eye Surgery i...
In PRK, because the laser removes tissue from the surface of the eye, the body will attempt to fill in the defect much like if you had a cut on your hand. Since corneal tissue has different healing properties, the process can normally be regulated with the use of topical steroid drops which patients may be required to use over a one-month period. In LASIK, these drops are only used for a week. These drops will rarely cause any problems. See similar questions...

Dry eye syndrome is a condition caused by loss of water from the tear film. When the tear film loses water the concentration of salts and proteins, relative to the amount of water, increases--the tear film concentration increases. When tear film concentration increases scientists say that its "osmolarity" increases. This increase in tear film osmolarity causes the characteristic irritation and changes on the eye surface known as dry eye syndrome. See similar questions...

How is dry eye treated?

Dry Eye, Dry Eye Treatment, Blepharitis, Sjogren's Syndrome,...
Artificial tears have been the mainstay of dry eye treatment. Until recently, these used to be recommended like cigarette brands--doctors would hand out whatever they had in the sample closet, and patients would pick their brand. Patients would find that no matter how long or how frequently they used these drops their eyes would still be dry. Fortunately, Jeffrey Gilbard, MD, working at Harvard Medical School's Schepens Eye Research Institute, has developed an eye drop call TheraTears. See similar questions...
