After the procedure, a compression stocking should be applied that cannot be removed except on your follow-up visits. Cast protectors can be purchased to cover the stocking and allow you to shower. No limitations are placed on normal activities with your stocking in place. On occasion, temporary skin pigmentation changes may occur following sclerotherapy. Limited sun exposure or use of 30 SPF sunscreen is advised until this staining resolves.

Shut your eyes while you are standing, and feel your legs. If you cannot feel the veins, you have a spider vein problem. If you can feel the veins, and they push in easily but bounce right back out, you have varicose veins.

No particular preparations are required for spider vein sclerotherapy. Varicose vein treatment requires that you shave your legs and not use lotion prior to treatment. Wear loose fitting clothing the day of the procedure and eat as you normally would. You will be able to drive home and resume normal activity after the procedure.

In most cases, with the appropriate documentation of symptoms and diagnostic tests, treatment is covered.

We cannot rule out the possibility that large veins will not burst during treatment or that the blood will not clog and clog lung artery. Unfortunately, you cannot. Some medications work to alleviate such symptoms as pain, but do not effect on a permanent and complete cure. You cannot cure varicose veins with compression stockings but can slow their progress. They are used for after treatment.

Vein ligation and/or stripping is a minor surgery that is commonly peformed on large varicose veins. The procedure can also be done to prevent venous skin ulcers from reoccuring after treatment. This procedure is performed to avoid complications of vein damage. Vein stripping is the only choice for eliminating the saphenous veins (the largest surface veins in the legs) that serve as the major channels for blood among the superficial veins in the leg.

Varicose veins are larger, twisted and more prominent than normal veins. Quite frequently, they are associated with many spider veins.

During your consultation with Dr. Shah, your veins will be identified and a treatment plan will be determined. Patients with small, superficial red veins can often be treated with Laser Vein Therapy in a series of 3-4 treatments at 4-6 week intervals. Many factors contribute to these unsightly veins, these include: weight gain, hormonal shifts, pregnancy, and heredity. Due to these contributing factors, occasional touch ups may be required to keep the new and emerging spider veins at bay.

Spider veins are formed by the dilation of a small group of blood vessels located close to the surface of the skin. Although they can appear anywhere on the body, spider veins are more commonly found on the face and legs. They usually pose no health hazard but may produce a dull aching in the legs after prolonged standing. Varicose veins are abnormally swollen or enlarged blood vessels caused by a weakening in the vein's wall.

Generally, laser can only be used on veins of very limited diameter. Varicose veins can not be treated by laser at all. Injection sclerotherapy of incompetent reticular(feeder) veins is preferred before laser is used to treat spider veins. Sclerotherapy is a more effective and less costly method of treatment of unsightly leg veins in most cases. Laser will not replace sclerotherapy for a foreseeable future.

Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the veins with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. The surface veins are no longer visible. Sclerotherapy relieves symptoms due to varicose and spider veins in most patients. With this procedure, veins can be dealt with at an early stage, helping to prevent further complications.

Although, initially the concern is cosmetic in nature but almost invariably these varicose veins enlarge and can cause complications. Symptoms like cramps, aching, and heaviness in the legs are frequent complaints. Later on serious complications, such as ulcers, clotting, and bleeding, could occur some of which are potentially life threatening. Great majority of spiders arise from varicose veins. This does not mean that a patient with many spiders should have the big, bulging veins in the leg.

Sclerotherapy is an elective procedure and can be done whenever the individual wants to have it done. The procedure does not take more than 30-60 mins and can even be done during an office lunch break. Treatment is done on an outpatient basis during convenient office hours. You can resume most activities shortly after each session.

Sclerotherapy alone will be effective for spider veins and many varicose veins. In many cases with the larger varicose veins a recommendation will be to ligate, (tie off) excise or remove the larger veins. This procedure, performed by a surgeon, enhances the effect of sclerotherapy. Again, this is a simple office procedure without restrictions or surgery. In some cases however, the vein is just too large or there are too many to remove comfortably in the office.
