They are easier to use. Starting the arc is easier because you don't have to manually strike the arc. Simply place the end of the welding gun at the point you want to start welding, lower the welding helmet, and pull the trigger. The weld starts by itself. Wire feed welders are better on thin materials. They don't burn through the metal like a stick welder can on thin sheet metal. There are two adjustments - one is the heat (or voltage). This determines the amount of voltage allowed to create the welding arc. The other adjustment is wire speed. This controls the speed at which the wire is fed out of the welding gun when you pull the trigger. You need to adjust the wire speed to the heat setting used so that they are balanced. A new wire feed welder can range anywhere from $150 on the low end to $1,500 for a top quality unit. You can use a flux cored welding wire - this wire is just like a welding rod except that the flux is inside the wire instead of outside.
