We will place a temporary crown or bridge to protect your teeth and gum tissues while a custom restoration is being created for you in a dental laboratory. In addition, this temporary will help prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting, ensuring that your final custom-crafted crown or bridge will fit. Temporary cement will be used to hold the restoration in place.

Both crowns and bridges are referred to as restorative dentistry. They are used to return your teeth to their desired look and stability. Crowns and bridges both add stability to the surrounding teeth and give your smile a more beautiful look.

Crown and Bridge treatment is a permanent method of replacing missing teeth. A crown is placed on an individual tooth, (somewhat like a thimble over your finger) where there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. A bridge spans a space where one or more teeth have been lost in the dental Arch. The teeth on either end of the span are crowned, and are referred to as Abutments. The false teeth in a bridge that join the abutments are referred to as pontics.

Our incredible CEREC system allows us to perform the entire crown procedure in one visit, eliminating the need for a temporary crown and second visit. However, we are available to help you if a temporary crown does come off or break.

Wait till you’re done. The substance used when taking an impression will pop your temporary off. It won’t eat your teeth. People who abuse the system might develop sensitivity to their teeth, but this will subside. Wearing it for 24 to 48 consecutive hours could cause sensitivity.

If a temporary bridge is needed, unless you require a clear span of more than 80 feet, or especially heavy loadings at a long span, a Railspan® bridge will be the most appropriate answer. If you will require a clear span longer than 80 feet, or wish to use the bridge for heavy loadings at longer spans, then although your bridge is temporary, Newspan® would be a more appropriate bridge.

Absolutely. If the crown or bridge is not replaced quickly enough, the surrounding teeth may shift, resulting in the inability to replace the restoration. Now that statement was made under a very large assumption, that being that the restoration is, in fact, structurally sound and able to be replaced. It is fairly common that a crown or bridge that dislodges can be re-cemented with few complications, however this is not always the case.

If it is not a tooth that shows and is not too sensitive do not worry. Call the next business day and we can replace it for you. If it is essential that you replace it immediately, drug stores carry temporary cement and filling material. Simply clean as much from the tooth and crown as possible and make sure they are also dry then follow directions and press your crown back in place. Please call at your earliest convenience to arrange for a more permanent solution.

A dental crown sits on top of a broken, chipped or discolored tooth. Dental crowns can also be used to cover teeth with large fillings and not much tooth left. Dental bridges cross from a healthy tooth to a healthy tooth, covering the space left when a tooth has been pulled. It bridges the gap and provides stability while allowing you to bite and chew normally.

Avoiding hard or sticky foods will keep the temporary crown in place. If the temporaries do come out call our office for re-cementation or apply a small amount of denture paste to the temporary.

Minimise the use of the side of your mouth with the temporary crown. Shift the bulk of your chewing to the other side of your mouth. Avoid sticky and chewy foods (e.g. chewing gum, caramel) which have the potential of grabbing and pulling off the crown. Slide flossing material out-rather than lifting out-when cleaning your teeth. Lifting the floss, out as you normally would, might pull off the temporary crown.

If your temporary crown is loose and you are not experiencing any discomfort, there is no emergency. Just contact our office during regular business hours to schedule an appointment so we can recement. If after hours and you can temporarily recement it by placing a dab of vaseline, toothpaste or denture adhesive inside the crown and placing it back on your tooth with finger pressure.

The patient's general dentist is the quarterback of the implant team. The general dentist will decide who will place the implant, what laboratory will make the final prosthetic products and who will actually do the prosthetic work. Most commonly the restorative general dentist who suggests the need for the implant therapy to the patient will perform the final prosthetic services.
