You will not be placed all the way into the scanner. However, depending upon the area being scanned, you will enter either head first or feet first. For example, feet, ankle, knee or leg MRI scans require you to go in feet first. All other scans, such as head, spine, shoulders, or torso require you to go head first.

If you have a pacemaker, you should not be imaged because the pacemaker may be damaged in the magnetic field of the scanner. If you have metal filings, shrapnel, or ferromagnetic clips or pins in your body, you probably will not be imaged because these objects could be twisted by the magnetic field and cause serious injuries. Most new surgical metal implants are made of a high quality stainless steel which is non-magnetic. You can be imaged with these. Dental fillings and bridgework are okay.

The MRI scanner needs shielding from outside radio wave interference that can decrease the image quality.

The tapping and knocking noise you hear during your scan is caused by magnetic coils that switch on and off during the scan. These coils measure the signal coming from your body in order to make the images that are used for your diagnosis. Because these coils are switched on and off rapidly, they vibrate and cause the noise you hear. Since these noises are often very loud, the technologist will give you some type of hearing protection.

No metal is allowed in the MRI scanner, but, there are exceptions. Joint implants, bone screws and plates are allowed into the MRI scanner, provided the implants have been in the body at least four to six weeks. Other implants, such as vascular aneurysm clips or pacemakers, will not be allowed in the MRI scanner. Metals such as jewelry, watches, earrings, dentures, partial dental plates, hairpins, hearing aids, keys, coins, or other loose metal should be removed before going in the scanner room.

Bureaus: You could have your drawings scanned at a bureau, put the images on disk, tape or CD ROM and use these stored raster images as input to TracTrix. A disadvantage of this approach is that you will not be able to experiment easily with scanning difficult images - dirty, delapidated or cluttered ones - so that they vectorize optimally.

Yes, you can. Your physician may have a business relationship with a particular diagnostic center and therefore prefer sending you to that particular site. The imaging centers will have closed bore scanner or open type scanners. You could ask your doctor if both types are available in your area.
