To treat nearsightedness, the cornea must be made flatter (less steep). This is accomplished by removing tissue from the center or central portion of the cornea. To treat farsightedness, the central cornea must be made steeper (less flat). This is accomplished by directing the laser beam to remove tissue from around the peripheral (outside) area of the exposed cornea. The most important things a patient must have prior to any refractive surgical procedure are realistic expectations. The goal of these procedures is to decrease one's dependence on corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses). While LASIK surgery is an effective means of improving your vision, not everyone who undergoes the procedure will experience 20/20 vision. Studies have shown that, on average, more than 90 percent of patients who receive conventional LASIK achieve 20/40 vision or better. The first day after LASIK, most patients have experienced a large improvement in their vision, usually 20/40 or better. This greatly depends on your preoperative prescription. You can expect to regain approximately 90-95% percent of your vision in the first two to three days after LASIK. The remainder of your vision will improve gradually over several weeks.
