Thin-bed mortar designed especially for AAC is used to install SafeCrete blocks and lintels. It is sold in ready-to-mix powder form. Thin-Bed Mortar is polymer modified Portland cement specifically designed to bond our blocks for interior and exterior wall construction. Just 1/8 inch mortar bed is needed to adhere the products. This extremely thin joint prevents heat loss and speeds installation. For best results, apply Thin-Bed Mortar with our notched trowel.

ASTRA-GLAZE-SW® + blocks should be laid in a full bed of mortar which is consistent with the best concrete masonry practices following the recommendations of NCMA Tek Note 9-1 carefully for best results. See Mortar information in the General binder section. All exterior mortar shall include W.R. Grace DRY-BLOCK® water repellent additive added to each batch in the appropriate dosage rates for mortar type (M,S, or N) per manufacturer’s instructions.

A - Yes. The pre-mixed bags of mortar are a great solution. Many manufacturers of pre-mixed mortars blend a special mix for stone veneer. See your supplier for detailed information on acceptable mortar products.

Obviously, you want to avoid the kind of damage described above, and in order to accurately recreate the original mortar you typically have to have the mortar analyzed. Hydraulic lime mortar is a lime mortar that hardens in damp or even wet conditions through a chemical reaction rather than exposure to air. (This is in contrast to standard, or non-hydraulic lime mortars, which harden by absorbing carbon dioxide, a process known as carbonation.)
