The alias command creates command aliases. Type alias shortstring="longcommandstring", substituting your own commands for shortstring and longcommandstring. The quotes around longcommandstring are necessary it the string contains spaces. You can put the alias commands into your login profile (see the next question).

Shortcuts to your favorite emoticons can be easily created to send your buddies. Simply place the cursor on any emoticon and click on the "EDIT" text which appears on the top of each icon. Clicking it will show an edit box where you can type the shortcut text you'd like, and after pressing "OK", you'll be able to select that emoticon by simply typing the shortcut text in the chat box.
