Why does the MRI scanner make so much noise?
Radiology - Magnetic Resonance Imaging ( MRI) - FREQUENTLY A...The tapping and knocking noise you hear during your scan is caused by magnetic coils that switch on and off during the scan. These coils measure the signal coming from your body in order to make the images that are used for your diagnosis. Because these coils are switched on and off rapidly, they vibrate and cause the noise you hear. Since these noises are often very loud, the technologist will give you some type of hearing protection. Why does the scanner make so much noise?
MRI - Frequent Questions - UBCH - MRI - Magnetic Resonance I...The technique of MR imaging employs magnetic fields called gradient fields that are used to determine the location of signals generated in the MRI process. These powerful gradient fields are switched off and on at a very fast rate and the result is a banging sound. Patients have described the sound as that of a broken washing. You will be provided with hearing protection to dampen this noise. See similar questions...

Why is the MRI scanner so noisy?
FAQAlthough there are no moving parts inside and MRI scanner, noise is generated when powerful Radio Frequency (RF) electrical pulses are turned on and strong electromagnetic fields are switched off and on rapidly. We offer all patients earplugs, or nice music in headphones to help reduce the noise level. Many people can go to sleep during a scan. See similar questions...

How does MRI work?
FAQ'sMagnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) generates cross-sectional images of the human body by using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The process begins with the positioning of the imaged body in a strong, uniform magnetic field, which polarizes the nuclear magnetic moments of water protons by forcing their spins into one of two possible orientations . Then an appropriately polarized radio-frequency field, applied at resonant frequency, forces spin transitions between orientations . See similar questions...
