When the outdoor temperature reaches a consistent daytime reading of 75 degrees, it may be necessary to apply shading to lower the temperature inside the greenhouse. Although temperature is scattered by the ribs between the polycarbonate walls, one may also want to consider the addition of a shade cloth. It is important to remember, however, that shading may slow the growth of some vegetables and flowering plants.

Making a simple shade cloth or greenhouse covering for your raised beds is easy. At your local hardware store, buy a length of flexible pipe (1/2" PVC works well and is generally affordable) and cut it into equal length pieces that—bent to fit over the metal pins—form half-circles of appropriate height. For example, in the picture to the right a 20' pipe was cut in half to make two 10' lengths, which form arches about 4' tall for use with a 4' wide raised bed.

For specialty shaped windows, we recommend either Pleated Shades or Vertical Blinds. The versatility of those products is the greatest and the quality the most advanced to handle those windows.

Because the covering material used on this greenhouse is not insulated, you cannot heat this greenhouse and it will not stay warm enough to actively grow throughout the winter. Because of this, it is best to use the Enthusiast for starting seedlings in the springtime and protecting your plants when temperatures drop a bit during early fall.

No. Although the winter months have short days, the hours of daylight are really beautiful, even during the winter solstice (December 21). Every week there is about 3/4 of an hour difference in the amount of daylight; it takes half a year, or 26 weeks, to change from 20~24 hours of daylight to 20~24 hours of night, depending how far north you are.

The official CDC figure is 37; however, it is acknowledged by the authorities that deaths may have been missed during the time that this counting was conducted. The figure 38 often seen on the Internet is wrong and represents one death accidentally counted twice by the FDA, according to sources at the CDC who wrote to me in response to a letter from me to the CDC about the matter.

The simplest way to determine the correct shade size for your table lamp is to measure the lamp height from the bottom edge of the table lamp base to the top of the lamp stem (just below the socket cap). The shade you choose for your lamp should have a bottom diameter that is within 2”, plus or minus, the measured height of your lamp.

All of the grille cloth we use is acoustical grade. I recommend the black Spandex cloth particularly because it has the least acoustical resistance.

Although hosta is a shade loving plant, if it's too dark hostas will probably grow and survive, but not flourish. Ideally, hostas prefer a dappled shade. While some hostas are sun tolerant, if there is not enough shade it may effect leaf color.

I cut the "blank stock" using a quilter's tool -- cutting mat, straightedge, and "Olfa" cutter (looks like a pizza cutter, but MUCH sharper). That way, I could cut through about 5 layers of cloth at once. Be sure to learn how best to cut fabric from a QUILTER, so you don't waste any cloth .

UTIs are more common in hotter months because we tend to be outdoors and more active. Perspiration and fluid loss lead to more concentrated urine, which creates the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and develop a UTI.

If you have a condition that appears benign, our radiologists may recommend a six- month follow-up examination, to more closely monitor the condition and to confirm stability. Mammography is the best test available, but it is not perfect. Between 10-15% of breast cancers may not show up on a mammogram. (But 85-90% do!) This makes breast self examination very important.
