It is important, however, to use an oil based primer before using the acrylic topcoat when painting over bleeding woods like Redwood or Cedar. The "best way" isn't always the cheapest. I have seen home made jobs using masking tape and a rattle can of touch up paint and the trim looks horrible. The best way to paint your side mouldings is to take your car to a body shop. Alhtough it can be done by yourself, the side mouldings are a highly visible portion of your car. You can expect a 5-7 year shelf life from Liquitex acrylic products, provided the materials are stored properly at room temperature, kept tightly capped and kept free of contaminants. This problem typically occurs because the columns have not been treated with wood preservative on the inside (or core) of the hollow column. This allows moisture to be wicked from the inside to the outside of the column, where it then causes the paint to flake away from the wood. One exposes the paint with infrared heat for 20 to 60 seconds. Usually you can remove all layers down to the initial primer coat.
