Long answer: Studies supporting spanking don't exist primarily because the necessity to defend spanking is a fairly new occurrence. Unfortunately, as the emotional anti-spanking rhetoric becomes more ingrained in our culture, studies supporting it won't be allowed because "it's abuse!" The short answer is that there's no way to guarantee that you won't leave marks. If marks are an absolute no-no for some reason, you probably shouldn't play. However, if I wanted to be almost certain I wouldn't mark someone, I'd probably stick to a nice, hard hand spanking.
