This layer is based on Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB) coordinate data. The locations of Public Land Survey System (PLSS) corners, as represented in geographic coordinate pairs, were derived from a variety of source documents, which include U.S. General Land Office and BLM survey plats/notes, as well as survey data obtained from other U.S. Government agencies, private sector survey firms, and local governments.

Because the BLM has a backlog of exchange proposals, we have found that the most efficient procedure in this Resource Area has been to work instead through a third-party. This party goes into the real estate market to secure private lands which can be exchanged with the BLM. These lands are identified in conjunction with the BLM's planning process, to maximize access, consolidate public holdings and enhance management of sensitive resources.

This rectangular survey system is now know as the Public Land Survey System. Under the cadastral system the public domain is plotted from a principal meridian (running north and south) and base line (running east and west) into a grid of squares approximately 6 miles to the side, called "townships." The township is further divided into sections of one-mile squares containing 640 acres. Sections are numbered 1-36 from the upper right hand corner.

The Horsetown Clear Creek preserve (an agreement is currently in effect with this preserve to close hunting in the area). Public lands are no longer open to homesteading. The Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 repealed the homestead laws in all states except Alaska which was closed to homesteading in 1986. Many parcels of public land are, however, available for acquisition within the Redding Field Office.

BLM does not sell land outright. Land is exchanged at fair market value, not acre for acre. BLM tends to use a third party organization to do large land exchanges (it costs the same whether a quarter of an acre is exchanged or a quarter of a million acres is exchanged). If you are interested in a particular piece of land please write a letter to our office and give the township, range and section of the land, or your best description of the land.

You can download all of the LSIS data from the LSIS Viewer, one state at a time, by using the "State" selection tab in the upper left portion of the webpage. However, many of the states in the Eastern U.S. do not have available data. The alternate source (mostly USFS) data will be selected along with the GCDB data, but you will need to download it as a separate file for each area you select. The separate download files will all work together once they are downloaded.

The BLM is an agency in the Department of the Interior, in the U.S. Government. The BLM manages 264 million acres of surface acres of public lands located primarily in the 12 Western States, including Alaska. The agency manages an additional 300 million acres of below ground mineral estate located throughout the country.

Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is the land grid displayed as Township, Range, Section, and Aliquot. The data is computed from the Bureau of Land Management's survey records (official plats and field notes), local survey records, and geodetic control information. PLSS data are stored as Geographic Information System (GIS) features that can be incorporated into various GIS systems.

Shapefiles can be converted to coverages using ArcGIS. GCDB coverages in coverage or E00 file format can be obtained on CD by requesting the data via the "Contact Us" link. The cost of the CD is determined by the time required to extract and save the data to CD, plus administrative costs.

Through its land-use planning process, the BLM identifies parcels of land for potential sale that fall into one of the following categories: land where disposal will serve important public objectives, such as community expansion and economic development. The growing cities and towns of the West are spreading closer or even next to once-remote BLM-managed public lands. As a result, the public in general - and Westerners in particular - appreciate the open space guaranteed by BLM.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is responsible for cadastral survey, land and mineral use authorization, conveyances, and resource management of the public lands. In support of the development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, the BLM was given the lead by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB Circular A-16) for Public Land Conveyance, Federal Land Ownership Status, and Cadastral Survey.

All 50 states have laws requiring a Licensed Land Surveyor(LLS) to assume the legal responsibility of a land survey. The Licensed Surveyor is a highly specialized individual, whose education, experience, and competence have been formally examined and licensed by the State of Utah. Their conduct and the quality of their work are subject to a defined code of ethics.

The County does not survey private property. You must hire a licensed Land Surveyor who can prepare a Record of survey for you.
