Yes, because the SignaLink doesn't require a connection to the computer's serial port! Unlike other interfaces, the SignaLink never requires a serial port connection. This is particularly handy if your computer doesn't happen to have one! In addition to simplifying your installation, this feature also reduces the likelihood of the computer's RF noise getting into your radio. It also eliminates serial port related transmit problems that plague other interfaces.

Some laptop computers don't have serial ports, but they do usually have at least one USB port. There are a number of very inexpensive converter cables available. They use a device driver to create a serial port under windows operating system. The driver that comes with the converter cable must be compatible with your version of windows of course, and the USB ports must be functioning, both in hardware and in the operating system and in the drivers for the convertor cable. The IBM ThinkPad also has a IrDA port that can collide with your serial/COM port. The best way to solve this problem is to disable the IrDA port. This can be done in the Device Manager (varies per operating system version). While you're there, verify that the serial/COM port is enabled. When asked, reboot the PC. The 10-pin header next to the dip switches is a 2nd serial port. You can hook this up to your PC's serial port (with a null modem), and get connectivity that way, utilizing the 'qtalk' app on the i-opener.
