In theory when you write something, it is copyrighted. No further steps are required to protect your intellectual property. In reality it might be difficult to prove that you are the genuine author without extra evidence. You can officially register your work with U.S. Copyright Office for $30 (application process takes 4-5 months).

Internet is medium, which is open to abuse – some people might re-publish your work and claim it to be theirs. There is no easy way to solve this problem. Some poets may appreciate the effort of a rewrite from a fellow poet, but some may not. Rewriting sections or giving comments on specific lines are usually the most welcome. If you feel you know the poet well and understand his or her intent with the poem, you might venture a rewrite; but keep in mind that the poet may not feel comfortable with someone else "taking over" their work.

They are rejected if the content may be offensive or inappropriate (eg 'killing, suicide, prostitution, rape, abuse' etc.) For example we were submitted a very funny, well written poem about the OJ Simpson trial, but rejected it because it was in bad taste. I am always truly flattered when a person wants me to write them a poem for a specific individual or for a specific event. However, I write poetry that is from my heart, therefore I would never be able to find the words to write a poem for others. I always suggest that others try writing the poem themselves. I write from my heart and I know others can do the same. Give it a try.. you might be surprised at how well you can express yourself with poetry. And remember this.
