The DHCP Server Service is configured using "DHCP Manager" that is installed after the installation of the DHCP Server Service. Perform the steps below on the server that currently hosts the DHCP Server service. Be warned that while doing this no DHCP clients will be able to start TCP/IP so this should be done outside working hours. DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is used to automatically configure a host during boot up on a TCP/IP network and also to change settings while the host is attached. This means that you can store all the available IP addresses in a central database along with information such as the subnet mask, gateways, DNS servers etc. The basics behind DHCP is the clients are configured to use DHCP instead of being given a static IP address.

Start the Active Directory Sites and Services Manager (Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - Active Directory Sites and Services Manager)

You can have two or more servers handing out leases for different addresses. If each has a dynamic pool accessible to the same clients, then even if one server is down, one of those clients can lease an address from the other server. However, without communication between the two servers to share their information on current leases, when one server is down, any client with a lease from it will not be able to renew their lease with the other server.

The DHCP protocol is a real bugger. Currently, Argus cannot monitor it directly. Some Argus users have had success setting Argus up to run the program 'dhcping': This program does require being installed setuid root and has some limitations, so it may not work in all environments. Argus uses the RADIUS server-status extension for testing, this is not supported by all radius servers. It is known to work with: merit radius radiator cistron radius 1.6.5 and later free radius 0.

The DHCP client will lease an IP address for a period of 'lease time." The server will also "advise" the client that it should use 255.255.255.0 as its subnet mask. For example, the LAN default is set up as 192.168.111.255 as its broadcast address, 192.168.111.1 as the router gateway, and 192.168.111.1 as its DNS servers.

This could happen if the DHCP timer is set to high and a change or restart happens to the DHCP server. Basically the clients get out of sync with the server and it could take as long as the DHCP timer was set to get back in sync. In general there is no reason to change the DHCP timer from default settings.

While the DHCP server protocol is designed to support dynamic management of IP addresses, there is nothing to stop someone from implementing a server that uses the DHCP protocol, but does not provide that kind of support. In particular, the maintainer of a BOOTP server-implementation might find it helpful to enhance their BOOTP server to allow DHCP clients that cannot speak "BOOTP" to retrieve statically defined addresses via DHCP.

The DHCP RFC specifically says that DHCP is not intended for use in configuring routers. The reason is that in maintaining and troubleshooting routers, it is important to know its exact configuration rather than leaving that to be automatically done, and also that you do not want your router's operation to depend upon the working of yet another server. It may be possible to configure some types of more general-purpose computers or servers to get their addresses from DHCP and to act as routers.

By default, the LiveCD will simply try dhclient(8) with every hardware network interfaces it finds. If you have other network configurations you wish to test, such as static IP or PPP serial connections, you will have to configure them yourself. OpenBSD FAQ 6 is a great place to start.

You will need to edit your DHCP service in Gatekeeper, click the policies tab and add a policy. Click OK in the new policy to set it for Everyone, Unrestricted rights. Click OK and save your changes.

You can't have the DHCP server listening for requests directly from the users. This is because the relay agent is used to distribute the request to the right server, and in this case the server would answer to the user anyway. The Right Way to do it is to have the DHCP server in another machine located in the upstream network. Blocking requests from the users by filtering out any IP except for the relay agent in the firewall doesn't work either.
