Frost tender varieties (Marigolds, Lobelia, Busy Lizzie, Begonias, Geraniums, Fuschias etc.) can be planted out from Mid-May to Mid-June - but protect them if there is any danger of frost.

You always plant more of the things you like than the things you don’t; that stands to reason. But here’s a formula I use as an all-around rule. Row crops - carrots, radishes, parsnips - are planted in a row whose length equals your height, or a six-foot row for sons over thirteen years of age and for fathers; one-half that length for mothers and daughters over fifteen; a third that length for any children under fifteen.

The phenomenon known as gravitropism enables plants to sense and respond to gravity. How the shoots respond to gravity is not entirely clear at this point, but scientists do have a plausible explanation for the roots. When a seed germinates, or sprouts, cells at the tips of the root called statocytes release specialized starch containing plastids, or statoliths.

You can modify existing plants pretty significantly just by changing textures and branches widths and heights, the trunk, and other variables – so you can start with a full tree or plant and turn it into something else just through experimentation. Making plants from scratch does require some practice, but you don’t need to understand 3D modeling and rendering to do it at all.

Bog and marginal plants are planted in soil in special pots and placed on "ledges" or areas within your pond's water. Bog plants are placed in areas where there is approx. 4-6" of water. Marginal plants are also planted in pots with special soil and are placed in the pond at depths of 18-24". We carry Aquatic Plant Soil specially designed for planting aquatic plants in water gardens as well as different size of pots you need.

Roses combine very well with other plants. Lavender, cat mint, poppies, delphiniums, ladies mantle, pansies and fox glove to name a few have all done very well for Louise. Bulbs that have to be removed or replanted every year are not suggested.

The terms alien, invasive, exotic and weed are often used inter-changeably to describe unwanted plant species. As stated above, the term weed represents any plant that is growing where someone doesn't want it. The terms alien and exotic are used interchangeably to describe an unwanted plant that has been introduced to an environment by humans, or is non-native. Weeds may or may not be non-native.

We plant all the plants except Lotus directly into the gravel. The plants grow much better in the gravel because their roots will never get bound. This also helps the eco-system, because the plants will be able to search out more nutrients by letting the root system travel through the gravel and rocks.

Ultimately this is a consumer preference choice. Most plants will grow in close proximity to one another. Planting them close together prohibits the plant from expressing their true botanical form. This may be preferred if you are attempting to form a screen or hedge. If your preference is to not have the plants touch each other when they reach maturity, you need to determine the mature spread of the plant in question. The mature spread of each plant we sell is displayed on each plant web page.

If you can't plant for a day or two, set the plants in a cool place out of direct sun. Check plants for moisture. If the packing material around the roots of a bareroot plant is dry to the touch, moisten it and pour off any excess water. Do not remove the packing material until you are ready to plant. If the potting mix of a pot-grown plant feels dry, moisten it until water drains freely from the holes in the bottom of the pot.
