West Indian manatees can swim up to 20 miles per hour (mph) in short bursts, but they usually only swim about three to five mph.

It is unlikely that a manatee would injure a swimmer. However, the reverse is not true. Disturbing manatees in any way, i.e. touching them, surrounding them, chasing them, feeding them, etc., alters their behavior and can cause them harm. This may cause manatees to lose their fear of boats and humans or to leave the refuge of warm water areas. Any of the aforementioned actions is a federal offense that violates the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Southern Rights have a top speed of 17 km/h, but usually move at a modest rate of between 0.5 and 4 km/h. Their maximum diving depth is about 300m.

Manatees get their scars mostly from collisions with boat propellers, but they also get them from entanglement in fishing gear and from fungal infections. Sometimes these scars heal, but often they remain on the manatee for the duration of its life. Despite the obvious negative impact these collisions have on manatees, we use these scars to identify individual manatees.

There are two subspecies of the West Indian manatee: the Florida manatee and the Antillean manatee. Manatees that are found in the southeastern United States, mostly in Florida, are called (appropriately enough) Florida manatees. Antillean manatees are found in the coastal and inland waterways of eastern Mexico, Central America, the Greater Antilles, and along the northern and eastern coasts of South America. Manatees and dugongs belong to the scientific order Sirenia.
