A nurse practitioner (aka NP or APRN) is a registered nurse with additional education so that (s)he can assess, counsel and prescribe medication to patients as needed. NP's work with the doctors at Health Services.

Be sure to tell the doctor about any and all medical and emotional problems you might have. Don't leave anything out. Also be sure the doctor knows about all medications you are taking. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications, as well as nutritional and herbal supplements. A doctor will also want to know about your diet and whether you smoke, drink alcohol, use street drugs or caffeine. You will quite likely be asked about your family history.

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) who is skilled in treating illnesses and prescribing medication. The Certified Nurse Practitioner or CRNP at the Student Health Center are specialized in family medicine and have expertise in college health.

Nurse practitioners work collaboratively with physicians (in the private office setting) to provide comprehensive health care to women throughout their lifespan. Nurse practitioners will take detailed health histories and perform physical exams; they will also diagnose and treat a woman’s individual health care needs. They focus on in depth health education and counseling.

Appointments are preferred but walk-in hours are available during the two academic semesters from 9am to 4pm. There may be long waits when requesting to be seen during walk-in clinic. Acutely ill or injured patients are always given priority. Appointments are required for physicals, gynecological exams, STD testing, psychiatric care, patient assistance for medications, and travel health. You are encouraged to arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete paperwork.

In short, because there are so many variables, it is very difficult to accurately estimate the cost of an office visit in advance. Fees for office visits are based on what is done for you as well as the time spent with you; of course, any necessary lab work, tests, or procedures that are performed incur additional fees.

When you arrive – let the receptionists know you are here by booking in at the desk. The doctor or nurse will call you from the waiting room when it is your turn. On average, 20 appointments are wasted each week because patients do not turn up.

A Nurse Practitioner is an R.N. with advanced formal education who is certified by a national nursing organization. A Physician Assistant is a Health Care professional licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision who is certified by national Physician Assistant organization.
