Under Windows 98, the Disk Defragmenter does more than simply group together the disparate parts of files. It also has a new technology that reorders the clusters of the program files you use the most so that the programs will run faster. Some programs (most notably Microsoft Office programs) tend to start up considerably faster after you defrag.

files are deleted and new ones are written to disk, your data becomes spread all over your drive. The clusters that make up a single file can become scattered around the hard disk, no longer stored sequentially. That means the hard disk has to spend extra time searching for and accessing the files' parts. There are three options to control the permissions and ownership of files and directories. They are: umask, uid and gid. They are mentioned in Common mount options. When NT boots it performs a check on all volumes to see if the dirty bit is set, and if it is a full chkdsk /f is run. To stop NT performing this dirty bit check you can exclude certain drives. The reason you may want to do this is for some type of removable drive, e.g. Iomega drives: Where x is the drive letter, e.g. if you wanted to stop the check on drive f: you would type autocheck autochk /k:f *. This can happen if you terminated a connection during a transfer. A POP server is still running trying to service your (aborted) connection. Usually it will time out after about 10 or 15 minutes. Windows NT does not provide built in functionality to change Volume ID's, however NT Internals has produced a free utility that can be downloaded from http://www.sysinternals.com/misc.htm called VolumeID which can change the volume ID of a FAT or NTFS volume. At the moment, there are no quotas. This *does not mean*, however, that you can use hundreds of megabytes of disk space. Remember that you are sharing the same disk with many other grad students. Please be courteous. To find out how much space you are using, type "du -s" (no quotes) in your home directory. The number that is returned is in kilobytes.
