Both DVD-R and DVD-RW types generally come in the single-sided, single layer 4.7 GB capacity, which is roughly equal to 120-minutes of standard playing time. You can also now find 9.4 GB double-sided discs entering the market, although there are no players which will automatically play both sides of the disc without ejecting it and turning it over. Eventually, there will be DVD-R discs available that will hold around 20 GB of data, recorded into two layers on each side of the disc.

What about recordable DVD: DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and +RW?

There are three recordable versions of DVD-ROM: DVD-R, DVD-RAM, and DVD-RW. DVD-R can record data once (sequentally only), while DVD-RAM and DVD-RW can be rewritten hundreds of thousands of times. Final versions of the DVD-R and DVD-RAM specifications were published in August 1997 (see 6.1). DVD-RW will be finalized by the end of 1998. DVD-RAM uses Zone Constant Linear Velocity (also known as Z-CLV) for reading. It divides the disc into several districts and arranges in a spiral way. Each district contains several sectors. Each sector has its own physical address. Therefore, it uses the same "Data Random Storage" as HDD, which also provides burning repetition.
