There is no general population screening for prostate cancer on the NHS except for persons at high risk. Colon cancer screening will start in April 2006 in the NHS for colon cancer screening but only for people between 60 and 70 years (other bodies recommend screening from age 50). Neither will the NHS use the most up to date test as the NHS test does not distinguish between blood from meat in the diet and human blood. However, the test is still effective at detecting disease.

Yes, Canavan is a genetic disease that can occur in any ethnic group, however is most prevalent in people of Eastern-European and Ashkenazi descent. Genetic testing is now available (please consult your physician or health care provider). Screening is most effective if both parents are of Ashkenazi decent. It is not as effective in couples of mixed ethnicity. Testing alone will not totally prevent this cruel disease.

In this test, stool samples are collected in a small plastic container and analyzed in a laboratory for the presence of blood. The flexible sigmoidoscopy can only assess the lower rectum and colon for polyps. Both these tests can miss a lot of cancers and false positives can occur (conditions like hemorrhoids and rectal ulcers may also bleed). Data reveals that this test only prevent 12-16% of colorectal cancers. The sigmoidoscopy can only evaluate the bottom 20-24 inches of colon and rectum.

Screening is when a test is used to look for a disease before there are any symptoms. Cancer screening tests, including those for colorectal cancer, are effective when they can detect disease early. Detecting disease early can lead to more effective treatment. In some cases, screening tests can detect abnormalities such as polyps before they have a chance to turn into cancer. So removing polyps can prevent colorectal cancer from developing.

Several tests are available to screen for colorectal cancer. Some are used alone; others are used in combination with each other. Talk with your doctor about which test or tests are best for you. Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)— This test checks for occult (hidden) blood in the stool. At home, you place a small amount of your stool from three consecutive bowel movements on test cards. You return the cards to your doctor's office or a lab where they're checked for blood.

Prostate cancer screening is composed of both a digital rectal examination and a serum PSA. The aim of cervical screening is to prevent women getting cervical cancer. It is estimated that the cervical screening programme in the UK prevents over 1500 cases of cervical cancer each year. Screening prevents cervical cancer by early detection of abnormal cervical cells. When abnormal cells are found they can be monitored and, if necessary, steps can be taken to treat them, thus preventing their further development.

The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Together, they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine (also known as the large bowel). Tumors of the colon and rectum are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. Benign tumors of the large intestine are called polyps. Malignant tumors of the large intestine are called cancers.

There is no routine screening for oesophageal cancer, but people who have a high risk (eg people with Barrett's oesophagus) should have an endoscopic examination every year (see below).

There is no standard screening test to find uterine cancer. A Pap smear, a test routinely used to find cervical cancer, is not very useful in finding uterine cancer. If you're at high risk for endometrial carcinoma, talk with your doctor about screening.

Can inflammatory bowel disease cause colon cancer? The short answer is yes. People who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk for colon cancer because the tissue of the colon is inflamed for a long period of time. Women with a personal (or family) history of uterine cancer may have a greater risk of developing colon cancer. If the uterine cancer was caused by a particular genetic mutation, women are considered at high risk for colon cancer.
