The W in the 5W30 defines winter or cold weather flow properties. This is a measure of the oil's ability to remain fluid in the cold. The number 5 dictates the specification for cold temperature (-30? C) whereas the 30 indicates the viscosity at normal operating temperatures.

The only significant difference is that 5W30 offers an additional 5?C of cold temperature protection, -30?C vs. -25?C of the 10W30. Otherwise, 5W30 and 10W30 engine oils have approximately the same characteristics, including viscosities.

The single most important thing you can do to get long life from your engine is to change your engine oil and oil filter as often as recommended by your car manual. This is good maintenance practice.
