Every intersection contains legal crosswalks; marked or unmarked. An unmarked crosswalk is the portion of the roadway at an intersection 10-feet wide that would connect opposite sides of the street.

A concordance is a set of definitions used to cross-classify products. An example would be a product assigned to a HS code of "abcd" which corresponds, in the HS-SIC concordance, to the SIC code "wxyz" . The codes should always be the same through the first six digits. Beyond six digits, some import and exports codes differ. Census cd-roms have this data in database format and are available at depository libraries and for purchase.

Crosswalks can either be "marked" with painted lines of white or yellow, or left "unmarked" at an intersection. The purpose of a "marked" crosswalk is to encourage pedestrians to use a particular crossing. Normally, crosswalks are "marked" at places where there is an abundance of pedestrian movement, at a signal, and where pedestrians cannot recognize a proper place to cross.

Remember, State law says that a crosswalk exists at any intersection whether or not markings exist. Pedestrians and motorists have the same legal rights and duties at unmarked crosswalks at intersections as they do at a location with crosswalk markings. Marked crosswalks are not installed arbitrarily. The main function of a marked crosswalk is to serve as a guide to indicate to pedestrians the appropriate place to cross. They are also used to warn motorists of potential pedestrian crossings.
