Frequently Asked Questions

Sometimes when I play a movie, the video is choppy or very pixelated. Why is that?

Internet Archive Frequently Asked Questions
Try downloading the movie to your computer and watching it locally. Sometimes choppiness occurs when we can't stream it to you quickly enough (because your connection is slow or our servers are overloaded). If you're watching an MPEG-4 that we derived from an original MPEG-2, we first reduce its size to 320 x 240 - a quarter of the resolution of NTSC video. We then translate it at 350 kbps, which is really borderline for that resolution.

Why does the video look choppy?

This has to do with the way the video is loading, not the quality of the video. In order for us to minimize space on our site, all videos have to load in order for you to preview them. Depending on your Internet speed, load times may vary. You can see the loading progress on the video itself in the form of a moving gray line. Take a moment to read the information about the clip to the right in the meantime, and once the video has loaded properly, it will play smoothly. See similar questions...

Why do the QuickTime movies I render play back choppy?

Frequently Asked Questions
The most likely explanation is that you have rendered the movie at a higher resolution than your computer can play back with the QuickTime compressor (codec) with which the movie was rendered. Keep in mind that full-motion video at broadcast resolution can not be played back by most computers unless it was rendered with a QuickTime compressor designed for computer play back. Please see the "QuickTime Addendum" chapter of the documentation which discusses these issues in detail. See similar questions...

Oh, Chris. I'm afraid you don't understand... Upscaling doesn't magically make new pixels where there previously were none. Yem is right in that the so-called "upscaling" is either done in the device outputting the video or in the display. What Yem wanted to know was the difference. The way I understand it, the difference is in how this is done.
