True porcelain enamel is glass, not paint. A "frit" is created from ground glass, and is sprayed onto the raw steel top much like glaze on pottery. The tabletops are then heated red hot to 1600? so that the frit melts. The resulting glass surface is easy to maintain and rustproof.
