Most people only had one or two sets of clothes. Girls wore shifts, similar to long nightgowns, underneath their outer clothing. On top of their shift was a fitted bodice. Aprons were worn over layers of skirts. Heads were covered with a cap or a crosscloth, which was a square piece of cloth that could be folded and rolled to form a head covering.
