Most people only had one or two sets of clothes. Girls wore shifts, similar to long nightgowns, underneath their outer clothing. On top of their shift was a fitted bodice. Aprons were worn over layers of skirts. Heads were covered with a cap or a crosscloth, which was a square piece of cloth that could be folded and rolled to form a head covering. Wide-brimmed hats were sometimes worn on top of caps, but hats were expensive. Shoes were expensive too. They were worn only when needed.

Ours is not a missionary religion, and we never try to make converts. We feel that if this path is right for you, you will find your way to it. We are, however, becoming more visual and vocal in an attempt to educate and dispel myths and superstitions about the Craft. New Century Scholars (NCS) provides last-dollar college tuition support to selected students from Jackson, Macon and Swain Counties. Students are selected for NCS participation in the 7th grade. Participation in New Century Scholars continues throughout the middle and high school years. After high school graduation, NCS students enroll in Southwestern Community College (SCC) to work toward an Associate degree.

New Century Scholars is a locally funded initiative. For each new scholarship, $500.00 is raised and designated to support a student’s participation in New Century Scholars. Each new NCS group is chosen based on the number of individual awards that can be supported. The funds raised for this group are pooled and used for the collective benefit of the students in that class.
